Your central air conditioner is one of the most important features there is when it comes to home comfort. In fact, it’s probably one of the biggest investments you’ve made in your home. It’s also one of the most specialized systems in your home—meaning only a trained and licensed professional should be the one to conduct repairs or any sort of service on the system—services like maintenance, for example.
Just like with your vehicle or many other heavy pieces of equipment, your air conditioner needs routine maintenance to keep working as it should, and it’s a lot easier (and cheaper) to address problems when they are small than it is to deal with an emergency later on because that small problem had a domino effect on the rest of your system.
But, if you had maintenance done months ago, or if you skipped it this year (it’s not too late to schedule it!) how know you need AC repair? And should you tackle those repairs right away or can they wait until next fall? For the later question—you should never delay repairs as it can turn into a premature system replacement if you’re not careful. As for how you know you need repairs, read on!
Signs Your System Needs Repair Work
- A Lack of Cooling: This is a very apparent sign that something is wrong with your air conditioner. After all, it’s supposed to keep your home at an even, comfortable temperature. Poor cooling power could be something as simple as a clogged air filter. The air filter is something you can and should replace on your own every 1-3 months depending on filter type. Another possibility is that you have a refrigerant leak. If this is the case, the leak must be located and repaired, and your system will need to be refilled (recharged) with refrigerant.
- Poor Airflow: What if suddenly, what used to be a nice, robust blast of air through your registers became weak and puny? There are a couple of different possibilities here. Your air conditioner’s blower may be starting to fail. Or, there might be a problem with your home’s ductwork. If you notice some rooms in the homes getting better airflow from the vents than others, this could indicate a problem with the ductwork.
- Thermostat Issues: The thermostat is the brain of your system. Something needs to help control and regulate the air conditioning system’s temperature settings, and that’s where this device comes in. But what if something is wrong with yours? Signs of a failing thermostat can include an AC system that won’t turn on or shut off, a temperature reading that doesn’t correspond to the temperature in the house, or a room or two that is cooler or warmer than the rest. Since your thermostat is a device you use for both your cooling and heating needs—so you need it for year-round comfort—it’s best to call for service right away.
