Heating may not seem as important in other parts of the country, but here in Kent, heating season is pretty much all year long. This means that you need a reliable furnace to get you through, especially in the winter and spring. Of course, with all the work our furnaces go through, even with maintenance it makes sense that eventually you’ll need furnace repairs.
Fortunately, all you need to do when your furnace needs repair is give our team a call and we’ll be there quickly! It’s helpful, though, to know what some of the common furnace repair needs are so you know what to watch for and when to give us a call. Read on to learn more!
Loose Electrical Connections
Even gas furnaces these days often have electrical connections, as many use an electric igniter now rather than a pilot light. That said, it’s important to be aware that any furnace can suffer from loose electrical connections.
Wires can become loose due to the shaking of the air handler. A loose wire can eventually cause a short and trip its circuit breaker. You may think this isn’t a big deal, since you can just reset the circuit breaker. But if you constantly have to do this, it’s a sign that something isn’t right with your furnace and it needs professional inspection.
Broken Sequencer
This problem is unique to electric furnaces—the sequencer is the component that staggers the activations of the various electric heating elements in the electric furnace so they don’t all come on at once and overload the electrical panel.
If the sequencer breaks down, your heating elements will suffer—either not turning on as they should or all turning on at once. Replacing the sequencer is an easy fix for our techs to make, simply give us a call!
Failed Electric Ignition System
As we mentioned above, even many gas-powered furnace systems use an electric ignition system now. This ignition system creates a spark to light the burners or heats up filaments like a light bulb to do the job of heating.
This ignition system can fail, like a light bulb, and the furnace’s safety features will stop the burners from turning on as a result. If your furnace simply won’t turn on, it’s possible that a faulty ignition system is to blame.
Miscalibrated or Faulty Thermostat
This can happen with any type of furnace or air conditioning system, since the thermostat is a component completely separate from the system itself. It’s sort of like the “brain” of your HVAC system, with the wires being the nervous system. A miscalibrated or faulty thermostat will send the wrong signals to your furnace, and cause it to turn on when you don’t need it, or shut off before you want it to.
Another possibility is that there can be a problem with the wiring, and the thermostat won’t be able to send any signals to your furnace. Therefore, your furnace may stay on or may not turn on at all.
Even if you suspect the problem is your thermostat, the best thing you can do is call in the pros to make sure. Replacing a thermostat is an easy job for our pros, but you want to make sure that’s actually the problem.
