Take Note of Foul Odors
Unpleasant or even unfamiliar odors should never be neglected. They could be signs of a gas leak, which should be taken care of as soon as possible after you notice it. Even if you aren’t dealing with a gas leak, bad smells can be the result of a problem with your ventilation system.
Do You See a Leak?
Leaks are something that should never be ignored when it comes to your boiler. Not only can a boiler leak cause significant property damage in your home, it can also be indicative of something going wrong within your boiler, and can lead to system inefficiency.
Are There Any Temperature Discrepancies?
If your water is typically colder or hotter than what the temperature is supposed to be, then you are likely dealing with a boiler problem. The water is probably not circulating like it should be, which means your boiler can’t possible heat your home in a consistent manner.
High Utility Bills
Naturally, your energy bills will rise in the winter, with the increased use of your boiler system. However, if you notice your utility bills are significantly higher than what they were last year, or compared to what your neighbors pay for similar use, then you are most likely dealing with a boiler system that is no longer working efficiently or effectively.
How Often Do You Need Repairs?
The above-mentioned boiler problems can usually be resolved with a fairly simple repair call. However, if you find that you’re investing in repairs on a fairly regular basis, then it may be time to replace and upgrade your boiler altogether.
A new boiler might seem like a significant investment, but when you consider the mounting cost of repairs, it’s actually more cost effective to replace the system. If you’re still unsure, consider this general rule: if your next repair is going to cost at least half of what a new boiler system would, then it’s almost always more cost-effective to replace the system.
