Winter is the time of year when home heating systems are put under the most stress, as they work to keep their homes warm on a daily basis. That added stress increases wear and tear on the system, which means that there is a much greater likelihood of problems developing. If you’re using a boiler to stay warm this winter, you should be able to identify the signs that it’s developing a problem. That way, you can get the system repaired as quickly as possible. Read on to find out more about the signs that your boiler is having issues.
Wet Spots
Boilers heat the home by distributing hot water through pipes in the walls and subfloor of each room. Just like any other pipe, these pipes are liable to develop leaks every once in a while. If you notice a wet spot on the carpet, or water pooling up from under the floor, it’s a sign that you have a leak in the system that needs repair.
Uneven Heating
Blockages can also occur in the boiler pipe network, although they are rarer. One of the most obvious signs that you have a blockage in one of your boiler pipes is having uneven heating in one of the rooms in your home. Cold spots are often the result of pipe blockages when it comes to radiant heating systems.
Rumbling
If you hear a deep rumbling sound coming from your boiler, that’s a sign of kettling. Kettling is caused by lime scale buildup in the boiler’s heat exchanger, which traps water in the pipe and causes it to evaporate into steam. This puts a lot of pressure on the heat exchanger, causing it to rumble. Call for repairs as soon as you notice this.
