Common Late-Season Furnace Issues

hvac vent on wall near floorWe may not suffer from blizzard-like conditions and below-zero temperatures on a regular basis like other parts of the country, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have any cold weather to deal with during the winter. In fact, our winters are typically more drawn out than our summers, which means our heaters get put through a good deal of work. For this reason, it’s imperative that you make sure your furnace is in good condition by staying on top of Puyallup, WA furnace repair needs.

We install and service gas and electric furnace systems, and we can handle any repairs that crop up with your system. A malfunctioning furnace is not only an inconvenience and an annoyance, but can also be a safety issue. And that’s why even though it’s near the end of our heating season, you should still be aware of common furnace issues that could crop up.

Little to No Airflow from the Ducts

Does it seem like nothing is happening when your furnace cycles on? Assuming that you haven’t accidentally turned if off and that your thermostat is set to a higher temperature than the ambient temperature within your home, you’ve definitely got a problem.

Chances are that the issue lies with the blower. A forced-air heating system needs to push air through the ductwork, and if your blower is malfunctioning then that’s not going to happen.

Cool Air Coming from Ductwork

This is a problem more likely caused by an issue with the ductwork itself. If your furnace is trying to heat your home through leaking and damaged air ducts, then it can result in cool air blowing from those ducts. This is common in homes where ductwork passes through unconditioned areas in the home.

If you notice cold spots developing and you see a decrease in indoor air quality as well, then you likely have leaks in your ductwork that’s servicing that area.

No Heat Generated

What if you don’t have a problem with your ductwork but you’re still getting lukewarm or even cold air from your ducts? There’s a few reasons this might be happening. If you have a gas-powered furnace, the combustion process might have been interrupted due to unsafe combustion temperatures.

There’s a component to your furnace called the thermocouple that might actually be shutting things down to keep your home safe. If you’re using an electric furnace, then the part to blame is probably a faulty sequencer. This part is responsible for firing up the elements in a way so as to avoid a surge that could trip your circuit breakers. If it’s not functioning properly, neither will your furnace.

Odd Noises

There are a number of different noises that might come from a furnace in need of repairs. You might have loose components banging around within the system. Or a lack of adequate lubrication might lead to grinding sounds.

Hear screeching? It might be a fan belt on its way out. How about loud booming? That’s likely to be delayed ignition—this problem can end up being a safety hazard so it’s important to contact us right away if you hear it!
