The Tacoma area never gets too terribly hot during the summer—at least, not consistently so like other parts of the country. This means we don’t tend to use our air conditioners as much as in other areas. But the fact that we use ours very little means that when they are operating, we want them to function as efficiently and as for little cost as possible.
This means ensuring that you pick just the right system when you arrange for AC installation services. But how do you choose the best cooling system? And how much will it cost?
Well, the short answer to that is, “it depends!” We’ve provided some guidance below that will help you learn about what determines how much a new system, and its installation, will cost.
Air Conditioning Cost Factors
There really are a number of factors that go into how much a new cooling system will cost. For instance, the installation of a ductless system could potentially be more than a central air conditioning system due to the minor construction needed to put up your air handlers. However, if you’re having a central system put it but need new ductwork or air duct repairs, then that installation could possibly cost more than usual.
The good news is, our team is here to help you decide what type of air conditioning system matches both your needs and your budget. We’ll review with you a variety of options, such as:
- System Efficiency Rating: This is one of the biggest factors to consider when installing a new air conditioner. Each cooling system comes with a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating, which tells you its level of efficiency. The lowest SEER rating on the market in our area is 13-14, with the highest being at 25. The highest rated systems will run the most efficiently, and will therefore cost the most to install. That being said, we don’t suggest picking the highest efficiency level your budget can handle—let us help determine what best matches your specific home.
- Air Ducts: We mentioned this above, but it’s worth delving into further. If you have a central AC system put in, you’ll need air ducts in place. If you already have ductwork, you need to make sure they’re in good condition. Were they installed by a professional? Are there any loose connections or damage? If your cooled air is leaking through damaged ductwork, then your cooling system can’t possible work as efficiently as it is meant to. Your air ducts will need to be repaired, professional sealed, and/or replaced along with your central AC installation—and this will affect the cost of the overall installation.
- Size: Bigger is not necessarily better. You’ll want to ensure that your HVAC technician helps you accurately pick a system that is correctly sized for your home. Naturally, too small of a system will struggle to effectively cool your home. But too large of an air conditioner can be just as detrimental. So like efficiency rating, don’t go as big or as high as your budget will allow. Let us help you make an educated decision, but know that the sizing will impact the cost of your installation.
- Community Savings: Usually, your community or municipality will offer rebates and incentives for the installation of high-efficiency equipment and appliances in your home. After all, reduced energy usage helps the environment in addition to your own wallet. Be sure to look into local rebates and resources.
