Furnace Installation: Not a DIY Project

technician-working-on-furnaceThe fact that you’re reading a post on furnace installation leads us to believe that you’re in the unfortunate position of having your heating system break down on you right in the middle of the coldest month of the year. We understand the sense of urgency here, but we really cannot stress how vital it is to your system’s operation and your safety to leave a job of this caliber to the pros.

There are a variety of reasons for this. There is a great deal of work that goes into each and every heating system installation we do. This work contributes to your comfort, your heater’s efficiency, and your home safety. This is especially true in the case of a gas-powered furnace

Below, we’ve uncovered a few reasons why furnace installation is not a DIY, or “do it yourself” project. Read on, and when you’re ready to, give us a call to discuss your heating options!

Most of the Work Is in Removing the Old Heater

This sounds like a simple step, but our customers are often surprised to learn that this is the lengthiest and often the most laborious part of the furnace installation process. It’s about more than simply pulling out the old heater—if your old system is already connected to a gas line for instance, we need to make sure nothing id knocked out of place or damaged when removing it.

We also need to make sure your furnace is appropriately sized for the space it’s being installed in. When we talk about sizing a furnace, we’re not just talking about its square footage. We’re talking about its capacity. Too large of a furnace will be just as detrimental to efficiency and comfort as too small of a system! Sizing requires us to conduct a heat load calculation, which is something our staff is specially trained to complete.

Connections Must Be Made Correctly

Once a new furnace system is installed—which typically means bolting it to the floor, as well—our techs will connect the furnace to the components needed for operation. This includes your ventilation system, or rather, your ducts.

Ductwork needs to be hooked up to the furnace correctly to avoid damage. Air ducts often have to be adjusted and shifted during this process, and this is where mistakes can happen if it’s not all handled as carefully as possible.

The next step is hooking up the furnace to its power source. As mentioned above, we have safety to contend with when it comes to gas-powered systems. Any connections made to your gas line require an experienced and specifically licenses professional to handle.

The last step is connecting the wiring. Even gas furnaces have some electrical wiring, and everything must be done to code to prevent fire hazards. It’s easy to see, in this case, why you should only trust an experienced heating installer.

Your New Furnace Must Be Tested

The final step, but not the least important, is testing the furnace to make sure it operates as efficiently and effectively as it’s meant to, as well as safely as it needs to. Our professionals will turn on your furnace and measure the intake and airflow. This will help us ensure that the performance is both efficient and safe.
