Your Options for Whole-Home Heating and Cooling

If it’s time to upgrade your existing air conditioner and heater, you may be looking for an all-in-one solution that offers both heating and cooling. You can keep reading to learn more about having separate air conditioning and heating systems versus an all-in-one system.

Then give our team a call when you are ready to schedule your HVAC installation service in Puyallup WA. If you’re not sure which of these options is the best for your home, family, and our climate zone, our team can help you make the selection that will best fit your unique needs.

Central AC Paired with a Heater

Many homes have a separate air conditioner and a separate heater. This is beneficial because each unit is specifically designed to either provide heating or cooling for your home. Since each unit is highly specialized, you can expect to get great results no matter what the season or temperature is.

You also get to customize your options. For example, here in Washington where our summers are milder, you may not need as much cooling power. On the other hand, you need a highly rated heater to keep your home warm during our extended heating season. Having separate units allows you to take these factors into consideration and customize your selections.

Heat Pump

You also have the option of choosing a heat pump. A heat pump is most comparable to a central air conditioner, although it does offer heating as well. Instead of using gas or electric burners to create heat, a heat pump transfers heat from outside to increase your indoor air temperature.

The thing about a heat pump is that you need to be cognizant of what type of heat pump you are choosing. Standard heat pumps are designed for climates that don’t have harsh winters with temperatures that are frequently below freezing–or even colder.

Although heat pumps work well in our climate, you have options if you want a little more heating power. First, you can choose a dual-fuel system which consists of a heat pump and a small furnace to provide that extra heating boost. You have the energy efficiency and overall safety of a heat pump while also enjoying the extra heat from a furnace.

Another option is a cold-weather heat pump which has a little bit more power and can therefore absorb more heat from outside to move into your home. As hard as it can be to believe, even when temperatures are at their lowest, there is still some heat in the air that the refrigerant lines can absorb and bring into your home for heating.

Ductless Mini Split

If you want to eliminate the attached ductwork, a ductless mini split is the way to go. It operates as a heat pump, although it has no attached ductwork. These units are known for being highly energy efficient since cooled and heated air does not get trapped in any attached ductwork.

Like a standard heat pump, you want to be aware of the ductless model you are selecting. Our team can help you choose one that will meet your heating and cooling expectations if this is the system you choose.
