If you’re thinking about switching to a ductless HVAC system, you may be wondering whether or not they are a good solution for heating your home during the winter time. The short answer is yes, ductless mini splits are great for heating, but with some caveats.

Just give our team a call for ductless mini splits in Puyallup, WA and we can answer your questions about how these unique systems work for both heating and cooling. Then you can decide if it’s the right solution for your home and family. Keep reading to learn more and decide if a ductless heating system is right for your home and family.

How Does a Ductless Unit Work for Heating?

Ductless mini splits are known for their exceptional cooling performance, but they also do a great job when it comes to heating. Much like a traditional heat pump, a ductless unit transfers heat from one place to another. In winter, a ductless model absorbs heat from outside your home and transfers it inside.

Even when it is chilly outside, there’s still some heat to be absorbed from the air to transfer inside. There was a time when ductless mini splits were primarily considered for cooling but not heating. Homeowners invested in add-on furnaces for an extra heating boost.

Thanks to technological advancements, heat pumps are now reliable as a primary heating source. Here in Washington State, where the winter temperatures rarely drop below freezing, a standard heat pump will be sufficient for most homeowners.

Customization of a Ductless Mini Split

With a mini split, you have individual units placed around your home in each room or zone. When you close doors to keep these areas separate from one another, you can maintain different temperatures in different areas. You may have one family member who likes to be warmer than everyone else and with a ductless system, you can make that happen.

Energy Efficiency for Heating

Heat pumps in general are more energy efficient for heating compared to gas or electric furnaces. Those systems create heat by warming up to high temperatures, thus consuming more energy. Heat pumps are simply transferring heat from one place to another. You can save as much as 30% on your costs for heating when you have a ductless heat pump instead of another type of heating system.

Discrete Design

Mini splits get installed high up on the wall or on the ceiling of each room. There are no exposed wires to make it look unsightly. They’re out of the way so they don’t take up much space that you would otherwise use for something else. The one consideration to make is that you need to place tall furniture away from the unit to optimize airflow.

Disadvantages to Consider

Although ductless systems are wonderful, there are some downsides to think about before making a decision. Ductless systems come with a higher price tag compared to standard heat pumps that attach to ductwork. They also require more upkeep because you have to service multiple individual units instead of a single larger unit.
