AC Maintenance: What Does It Involve?

We all know how important it is to take care of appliances and electronics, but it’s easy to ignore or neglect maintenance tasks, or even not see the value in maintenance. In order to ensure a properly functioning system, however, it’s necessary to schedule AC tune-ups at least once a year. But what does air conditioning maintenance actually involve?

Inspection

During your air conditioning maintenance appointment, your HVAC technician will conduct a full inspection of your entire system. During this inspection, they’ll look at things such as the evaporator and condenser coils to make sure they are unobstructed, clean, and able to absorb and release heat. Additionally, they’ll check your refrigerant lines.

Many homeowners believe it is normal for refrigerant to run low on occasion, but the truth is that your system is supplied with enough refrigerant to ideally last its lifespan. If you’re low on refrigerant, it means you have a leak that needs repair.

One other very important device they’ll look at is your thermostat. As the “brain” of your system, when your thermostat is not functioning correctly, it adversely affects the rest of your HVAC unit. Your technician will check that it’s reading the temperatures correctly and recalibrate it if necessary.

Repairs

Speaking of repairs, it’s during maintenance that your HVAC technician will check to see if any of your system’s components need repair. They’ll look at the electrical connections, your motors and fans, and even your condensate pan and drain to make sure that moisture isn’t overflowing. If they do recommend any repairs, it’s best to take care of them right away as to avoid more expensive repairs later on down the road.

Cleaning

Over time, the components of your air conditioning system accumulate dirt, dust and debris. During maintenance, your HVAC technician will clean the condensate pan and drain, your motors for the fans, and more. Doing so can help your system to avoid mechanical stress that can cause it to prematurely shut down.
